Mixed Media response and a Selected Typeface

I started this piece off by creating a Mixed Media Piece in response to John Hoyland and Kurt Schwitters. I wanted the piece to have some dimension so i added a cardboard circle (Center of a roll of tape) and placed some corrugated card on top that was stained red/orange with ink, i chose these colours to stand out against the cool/calm background and also because when i thing of Mars the colours Red and Orange come to mind. There is also a red, orange and yellow splatter this was created whilst i was covering the circular piece of card with ink, i included this as it seemed to work well with my composition idea.
If you didn't already notice, this piece is in response to David Bowies Life on Mars.

I wanted the composition to be simple like some of John Hoylands work. I added the text to the top left, this was because i wanted to balance out the composition. I chose the type face that was created using watercolour, fineliner and water because the font style is simple.

This piece may be improved in the next few months when i gather some found materials to link with Mary Bogdan.

Typefaces/Fonts

These 7 Typefaces/Fonts above were created using non-Traditional Graphic techniques. The Types of Media that i have used are Fineliner/Gel pens, Watercolour, Ink, Water and Acrylic.
About 6/7 of these outcomes were successful as I found that the third typeface was rushed and i wasn't too careful when adding extra water to the watercolour paint, this was meant to make a possible marble effect, instead is just bled into the paper and affected the fine liner outlining the letter. The majority of the materials worked well together and i found that the first and fifth typeface came out looking the best.

I chose to increase the scale of my acrylic simple font and included different media. I started with some Corrugated cardboard and removed top layers to create a textured effect. I then used a mixture of emulsion, Ink and Acrylic to create a texture/colourful background before i added the letter. I used a large template and some red/purple acrylic and a sponge to create the outline. i removed the template and used some white oil pastel to highlight areas.

My Individual Response to David Bowie's Life on Mars and Mary Bogdan

This is my individual response to Mary Bogdan. I created it using Corrugated cardboard, tissue paper, string mesh, brown parcel paper, acrylic, ink, magazine cut outs, Map and Music photocopies.
The background contains different texture and also a variety of pastel colours. In the foreground there is a mixture of Vibrant colours that add to the trippy effect. The text is just simply the title of the song.

I enjoyed creating this piece as i felt it was vary expressive and allowed me to relax. This is one of my favorite pieces as it also has an element of John Hoyland as well as Mary Bogdan.

Mary Bogdan

Madonna and Child

Mary Bogdan is an Interdisciplinary artist who paints and creates 3D pieces of work that include photography as well. She also creates videos and produces several limited edition prints from different series. Bogdan uses 'rare treasure' aka garbage like wood, metal, books, old paintings, boxes in her work. She likes the idea of being able to 'rescue' and assemble them with found objects from her own past.

'Madonna and Child' Is a series of seven mixed media pieces on paper, they have mainly been created using handmade papers. Bogdan focuses on different materials and composition. She uses a variety of materials such as paint, photographs, papers (handmade), tissue paper (design templates(textiles)), old books, string and much more depending on the piece of work she is creating. She has arranged the materials to adjust the visual weight on the piece and create a sort of balance. There is Minimal colours used, mainly natural browns, with bursts of colour in the photograph and torn image.
The Mood is simple and authentic, the piece is effective and sort of my style of mixed media art work.

My Individual Response to David Bowie's Music and John Hoyland

This is my own individual response to the previous Post. I focused on the calming side of Bowie's music and also stuck to a limited colour pallet in response to John Hoyland.

Group Work in Response to David Bowie's Life on Mars and John Hoyland

As a group project in response to David Bowie's Song 'Life on Mars' we created a large piece of work that was also influenced by John Hoyland. We focused on Bowie's stlye of music, lyrics, moods and colours.
I feel that Bowie's Music is rather calm until you listen to the lyrics as they're rather trippy and weird which is creative and opens up your imagination. My main idea was to have a calm, cool background of blues, purples and pastel colours and then in the foreground there would be bright vibrant colours like greens, yellows, reds, oranges and the occasional brown.

John Hoyland

Space Borne 1993

John Hoyland was Born on the 12th October 1934 and passed away on the 31st July 2011, He was one of the leading painters for Britain in his generation. His career was influenced in the late 1950s and 1960s by his experience with American Abstract Expressionism. He took those influences and deflection them to create his own individual pieces which set himself on his own path.

John likes to focus on colour, shape and composition in his work. He uses strong vibrant colours, he has a limited colour pallet for each piece he creates as there is minimal tones and highlights, the colours are blocked into organic flowing shapes. The dripping effect of the shapes work well to adjust the visual weight of the piece. My eyes follow the piece in a clockwise motion from the bottom right corner, this is because of the choice of colour and arrangements of the shapes. The composition of this piece is different in the way that the arrangements of the shapes do not look uniformed.
This piece creates a vibrant mysterious mood which creates intrigue as you try to link the Title of the painting with the painting itself.
